“So how are things going with your cameraman?” Eliza lost no time in getting down to business as soon as she had Angela in her car and they were heading to Eliza’s house so Angela could unpack her bags and get settled in the guest bedroom.
“Great. We had dinner with his parents last weekend and I think it went really well. They seemed like very cool people and he said they liked me, too. I can only hope he’s telling the truth.”
“Of course they liked you. Besides, what kind of a relationship is this if you’re already suspecting him of lying?”
“That’s not what I meant and you know it. It’s just that he’s a really nice guy and wouldn’t want to hurt my feelings if they didn’t like me.”
“A white lie is still a lie.”
“Look at you, Ms. Hollywood Cynical. What got up your butt?”
“Nothing. I’m only teasing. So has he met your parents yet?”
“Nope. Haven’t even told them.”
Eliza’s head snapped to the side as she regarded her friend, eyes wide, for a moment before forcing herself to look back at the road. “You haven’t told your parents you’ve been dating this guy for three months?”
“Yeah, I’m just not ready to deal with that whole thing.”
“How does he feel about this?”
“He hasn’t asked and I haven’t brought it up.”
“What are you going to do when he does bring it up?”
“I dunno. Maybe I’ll tell him I’m an orphan. Honestly, I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.”
“What are you going to do when they come to visit?”
“Yeah, like that’ll ever happen.”
“It will as soon as you become rich and famous.”
“Oh, that reminds me: I got the promotion.”
Eliza almost stopped the car, but restrained herself just in time. “And that wasn’t the first thing out of your mouth? Oh my god, congratulations! We have to celebrate.”
“Just as long as we don’t celebrate too hard. I’m afraid the best I can do is a little ranch dressing on my salad, and that’s only if I get it on the side.”
“Welcome to the dark side.”
“Yeah, I’m not too psyched about that part of it.’
“It’s really not that bad. You get used to it.”
“That sounds like Stockholm Syndrome.”
“Like I said: welcome to the dark side.”
To be continued…
