Short Story

The Price of Fame: Part I

Eliza really was trying to focus on the principles of mathematics Ms. Campbell was explaining but her eye was caught by the shiny papers of a brightly-colored magazine as her friend Angela snuck a peak under her notes while Ms. Campbell’s back was turned. They both hurried to take in as much as they could before Angela had to slam her notes back over the contraband.

Eliza caught up with Angela after class. “Hey, were you reading that story on Kathy Walsh?”

“It was only for a minute during the boring parts of class. I’ve already done all the homework.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone. If I could have gotten away with it, I would have pulled my desk up next to yours to get a better look.”

Angela looked sideways at her friend and the two girls giggled. “Can you believe she said that about the writers of that blockbuster she was just in?”

Eliza shook her head disapprovingly. “She’s flushing her career down the toilet. Doesn’t she see that? And it’s sad because she’s so talented.”

“She could really go far if she would just keep her mouth shut. Hollywood is a small town and by trash talking everyone she works with she’s isolating herself.”

“What does she think gives her the right to say stuff like that? I mean, lack of savviness aside, how could anyone publicly talk about their coworkers that way? Especially when they had nothing but nice things to say about her.”

“At least they did before that interview,” Angela pointed out. “Now I wouldn’t be so sure.”

Eliza was still shaking her head. “Do you think it was because she was on that TV show? Like she thinks just because she was on one hit show she’s so much better than everybody else?”

“Who can say? That much attention can really go to people’s heads sometimes. I don’t think it helps that she’s gorgeous either. I mean, I can think of a few people who aren’t famous or talented, but because just because they’re pretty they think they can get away with murder.” Angela gave a knowing look and Eliza snickered. She knew exactly who Angela was talking about.

“I don’t think she’d be so bad if Mr. Fitz didn’t cast her as every single lead.”

“You don’t think she’s sleeping with him, do you?”

“Ew! Gross!”

“I know, but it happens. Stephanie said Zoe told her she passed her driver’s ed exam by letting Mr. Hoffman feel her up.”

“Yeah, but that’s not going to help her when she gets pulled over for reckless driving. Just like Mr. Fitz’s favorites won’t have that relationship to rely on after they graduate and go out into the real world.”

“Yeah, but then they’ll just use their sexy wiles on cops and on the next director who comes along. I’m afraid this is exactly how it works in the real world.”

“Nope. I refuse to believe that. Talent will win out in the end. That and being a good person is all anyone needs to succeed.”

“You have heard of Keanu Reeves, haven’t you?”

“Yes, and I’ve heard he’s one of the nicest people in Hollywood, so that just proves my point.”

“Whatever. Come on, we’d better hurry or we’ll be late for rehearsal. And that won’t help us develop a very good relationship with Mr. Fritz, will it?”
