Brittney: Part X

short story

This is the tenth part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII, Part VIII and Part IX before continuing.

On her next day off, Brittney parked her car outside Mr. Kelper’s house in the early hours of the morning, this time she parked a couple houses down the street in the opposite direction from the one she had gone on her first visit, figuring someone might notice if she kept parking outside the same house. Besides, this position offered her a much better vantage point for sitting in her car and watching Mr. Kelper and his family leave the house.

The woman Brittney assumed was Mrs. Kelper was the last to leave and Brittney watched as she locked up the house, dropped the keys into an outside pocket of her purse, got into her car, and drove off.

This time, Brittney followed Mrs. Kelper, who went straight to a dentist’s office, unlocking the door to let herself in.

Brittney waited outside the office all morning, then followed Mrs. Kelper to a nearby restaurant, where she went straight for the salad bar. Brittney waited until she could see Mrs. Kelper paying for meal at the cash register, then she walked in the door, timing it just right so that she slammed into Mrs. Kelper, knocking her salad out of her hands and onto the floor.

“Oh, my gosh, I’m so sorry! Let me help you with that,” said Brittney.

“It’s fine,” said Mrs. Kelper, picking up her box. “The container didn’t open, so, no harm no foul.”

“Are you sure? I’d be happy to pay for your meal.”

“That’s not necessary,” Mrs. Kelper said with a smile. “Accidents happen, and the salad is fine, so please, don’t beat yourself up about it.”

“I just can’t apologize enough. I am such a klutz.”

“Really, don’t worry about it,” Mrs. Kelper said as she made her escape and Brittney pocketed the keys she had taken from the outside pocket of Mrs. Kelper’s purse.
