Brittney looked at Esperanza as though sizing her up. “Was it you?”

Having checked to make sure there was no alarm, and knowing that no one would be home for hours, Brittney took her time exploring the house.

Brittney waited until she could see Mrs. Kelper paying for her meal before walking in, timing it just right so that she slammed into Mrs. Kelper.

When Brittney reached the house behind Mr. Kelper’s and saw that it was dark, she walked up their driveway, not in a hurry, but not creeping either.
