This is the third part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I and Part II before continuing.
From then on, they had a standing appointment at the same bar every weekend. Alicea hoped he wouldn’t think of it as a date. She never said anything about it one way or the other – neither did he, and Alicea just hoped he wouldn’t bring it up so she wouldn’t have to reject him … again. He had asked her out multiple times when they were in school together, but she had never been even remotely interested in him.
Alicea was surprised by how easy it was to talk to Sven. Their conversations often lasted for hours and she always found herself amazed at how much time had passed. In the old days, she would have been checking the time constantly, but now she never even thought about it.
Sven seemed delighted every time it became apparent she had lost track of time, and although Alicea wasn’t as exuberant about it, she was pleased they had reached a point where they could just enjoy spending time together, without any expectations.
That lasted until the first time Alicea had to cancel on Sven.
It was summer and her family was going on vacation for nine days, so she missed two of their appointments. When she told Sven, he got quiet and hung his head, looking dejected. Alicea promised to make it up to him. He told her it was OK, but she knew he didn’t mean it. And she noticed he didn’t refuse her offer to try to make it up to him. Now she would have to think of a way to do that…
To be continued…
