This is the second part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I before continuing.
“Surprise breakups are the worst,” Alicea said, using her straw to shove ice cubes to the bottom of her glass so she could watch them float back to the surface.
“Yeah, and her sister told me later that I was the best boyfriend she had ever had and that she never should have broken up with me,” said Sven.
“Well, it’s her loss.” Alicea could hardly believe she was saying the words. A few years ago, she would have been cheering Sven’s ex for getting out while she still could, and wondering what she had ever seen in Sven in the first place.
“Yeah. But at least it led to me hanging out with you tonight, so it’s not all bad.”
“Yeah. We should hang out more. Why haven’t we done more stuff like this since you moved here?”
“I don’t know!” Sven seemed genuinely baffled.
Alicea knew it was her fault, but she didn’t want to admit it out loud. Maybe if she just avoided any kind of explanation, Sven wouldn’t try to point out that he had tried to see her when he first moved to town and she had lightly, but definitely put him off. “Well, we have to fix it now. When’s the next time you’re free?”
“Um, tomorrow night after work.”
Alicea froze as she her brain frantically tried to come up with a response. She had been expecting him to say something like “next week.” She wasn’t prepared for him to want to hang out again so soon.
“Sorry, it’s just, I don’t have many friends,” he said as her pause dragged on.
“No, it’s just … I have plans tomorrow night.” It wasn’t exactly a lie.
“It’s fine. I understand.”
“How about next weekend? Same time same place?”
He nodded, she smiled a genuine smile, and that was how it started.
To be continued…
