Ginny resisted the urge to throw her phone across the room. Instead, she hung up and screamed into her pillow, wishing she had never met David. In that moment, she wished for it more fervently than she had ever wished for anything in her life.
“Be careful what you wish for, dearie.”
Ginny hiccuped and sat up among her pillows and bed covers to see a short blonde wearing a blue, A-line dress, standing at the foot of her bed. She was even wielding a wand topped with a sparkling star. “Who the hell are you?”
“I’m your guardian angel.” The blonde gave a little curtsy.
“If that’s true, why didn’t you stop me from dating that jerk two years ago?”
“You really think you’d be better off if you had never been with him?”
Ginny rolled her eyes. “Uh, yeah!”
“Why don’t we take a look?”
“What? Take a look how? What are you talking about?”
“You’ll see.”
Ginny’s strange visitor waved her wand, then just stood there, looking expectantly at Ginny.
Ginny looked blankly back at her. “OK. What am I supposed to be seeing?”
“Take a look around. Notice anything missing?”
Ginny looked. At first she thought it was a stupid exercise. They were still in her bedroom. What could possibly be …?
The first thing she noticed was the clothes she was wearing. Just moments ago, she had been wearing one of David’s T-shirts. An old one he had left at her place for her to hold onto. She had gotten in the habit of wearing it when she needed comfort. She just now realized the irony of the fact that she had been wearing it when she found out he had been cheating on her. Now she realized she was wearing a completely different T-shirt. One she didn’t recognize at all.
“What?” Ginny pulled the bottom of the shirt away from her as she craned her head down, trying to get a good look at her new apparel. The gray shirt with the Greenday logo had been replaced by a black shirt with the Guns ’n’ Roses symbol. “What the hell is this?”
“Your boyfriend’s T-shirt.”
“I’ve never dated a Guns ’n’ Roses fan.”
“Well, when you decided not to go to that party where you met David, you went to a bar and met Jason instead. Jason just happens to be a Guns ’n’ Roses fan.”
Ginny wrinkled her nose. “I’m really dating someone who genuinely enjoys listening to this trash?”
The so-called angel shrugged. “I told you to be careful what you wish for.”
Ginny was far from reassured. She turned slowly as she looked about her room, searching for more clues to this mysterious new boyfriend.
There was another T-shirt draped over the foot of her bed and a sweatshirt hanging off a chair. These discoveries prompted Ginny to search her closet to see if any of her other clothes had been replaced. “Where is my red dress? That was my favorite dress!”
“You bought that dress because you thought David would be impressed with how it made your butt look, remember?”
“Yeah, and it did make my butt look awesome! So just because I wasn’t trying to hook up with David, I didn’t buy it?”
“Afraid so. The guy you ended up dating instead is more into leather.” The angel waved her wand and a black leather halter top floated out of the closet and hovered in from of Ginny who gaped at it.
“You have got to be kidding me!”
“Still wish you had never met David?”
“Is this some sort of sick joke?”
“Not at all. You’re the one who wished you had never met him. I am simply showing you what the alternative would have been.”
“But I …? But this …?”
The blonde shrugged. “Jason is different from anyone you’ve ever dated before. He makes you try new things and you like that about him.”
“New things like this?” Ginny finally took the halter top because having it hovering disembodied in front of her was too creepy. But she held it away from herself with the tips of her thumb and forefinger.
The angel had a twinkle in her eye as she smiled at her ward. “Try it on.”
“Excuse me?”
“Try it on. See how it makes you feel.”
“This. You want me to put this tragedy. On my body.”
“Just try it. What’s the harm? No one else is here.”
Ginny was still unconvinced. But she had no argument. The weird lady was right that she had nothing to lose. Maybe if she did what this woman wanted, she’d go away. Or Ginny would wake up. Or whatever needed to happen to end this seriously weird night she was having would happen.
To be continued …
