The First Date: Third Hour

Jeff despaired of this disgusting hippie couple ever leaving when they ordered a second round of tea and coffee. Organic tea and organic, fair trade, drip coffee. The two hippiest drinks known to hippiedom. Jeff thought he just might puke. Hopefully into one of their drinks.

“You know, I was actually pretty stoked when Amanda said you’d be willing to go out on a date,” said the guy with the dreads

The girl half laughed half snorted. “You talked to Amanda before you asked me out?”

“Yeah, why?”

“She used to have the biggest crush on you.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I actually asked her if she would be OK with me going on a date with you.”

“Really? What did she say?”

“She said yeah, she was cool with it.”

“Cool. I mean, I like Amanda, but I can’t see myself going out with her.”

“Yeah, I think she gets that that would never work out. But still. I just don’t want there to be any awkwardness between her and me, you know?”

“Totally. Yeah, I definitely feel much more of a connection to you than I do to her.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Cool, ‘cause I totally feel like I have a connection with you, too.”

Part of Jeff was afraid they were going to start making out right there in his coffee shop. The other part of him hoped they would because maybe that would prompt them to leave and then he could finally have some peace. A guy can only take so much.

“It’s weird, though. I mean, in the past I’ve always gone for the girls who are more, I dunno, put together? Like they wear makeup and they use hair products and all that.”

“Seriously?” The girl giggled some more. Jeff thought if she giggled one more time he might strangle her. He couldn’t be held responsible for his actions any more. “I can kind of see you with someone like that.”

“Yeah, well, it hasn’t worked out for me so far.”

“So you thought you’d try someone ugly like me?”

“No that’s not what I meant!”

The girl burst out laughing. “No, I know. I know what you meant.”

“You’re just … more real, you know? You don’t try to cover anything up.”

“No, with me, what you see is pretty much what you get.”

“That’s what I mean. And I like that. I think that’s what I need right now.”

“Yeah, I’ve never understood the mind games all the other girls play. It’s like, why bother?”

“Yeah, I don’t get it either. And I’m terrible at those games.”

The girl laughed and said, “So are you ready to get going?”

Jeff could hardly believe his ears. They were finally leaving!

“Yeah, I’m ready if you are.”

“Sure, let’s go.”

They were holding hands as they left and Jeff breathed his first sigh of relief in three hours.

The End.
