This is the third part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I and Part II before continuing.
“Explain mitosis to me again?”
I suppress a sigh. It’s really not that hard. But we go over the four phases yet again.
After what feels like the millionth time, Bianca is starting to get it. “And then in telophase, the nuclear membrane reforms around each set of chromosomes, the spindle fibers break apart, and and the cell finishes dividing into two identical cells.”
“That’s it.”
“Good. Now, what do you say we go take a coffee break while all this soaks into my brain?”
“I think that’s the best idea you’ve had all day.”
On our way to get coffee, I decide this is the ideal time to gather intel. “So, what movie did you guys watch last night?”
“Moulin Rouge.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Why do you sound so surprised? It’s, like, the perfect date night movie.”
“I just don’t know many guys who like to watch that stuff.” Actually, I had dated a few guys who had liked that stuff. They had all turned out to be gay. I felt my hopes for Owen dwindle as I wondered if I was repeating that mistake yet again.
“Really? I’ve never had a problem getting the guys I date to watch that stuff.”
“Is that because you date gay guys?”
“What?”
“It’s just that a bunch of the guys I’ve dated have turned out to be gay. It’s getting to the point where I’m starting to wonder if there’s something wrong with me.”
Bianca gives me an appraising look before saying, “I can’t see why. You don’t look butch to me.”
“What?” I’m almost offended.
“I just mean that most guys who don’t know they’re gay tend to go for the really butch girls because they haven’t yet realized what they’re looking for. But maybe that’s just the gay guys I’ve known.”
It’s true that I’m pretty much the opposite of butch. I’m petite, with long, blonde hair and blue eyes. I wear a lot of pink bows, flowers, and sparkly things because they help me stand out. “Maybe they figure I’m the perfect beard.”
Bianca laughs. “No one will ever guess they’re gay when they’re dating someone like you.”
“Exactly!” We laugh together as we head into the coffee shop. I ignore the twinge of guilt as I realize I’m starting to like this girl. That’s very dangerous when it’s someone you’re about to destroy.
To be continued…
