This is the sixth part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, and Part V before continuing.
“I just realized we never decided on the terms of our bet. Aside from bragging rights, of course,” Hugh said as he strode into the library.
Sandra pretended to be studying the spines of some books on a shelf and tried to look as though she had been there for a while and not listening at the door for her brother’s approach. “What bet?” she said, trying to sound casual.
Hugh lifted an eyebrow. “If you don’t know, maybe you weren’t as serious about that boy as I thought.”
“I never said I was serious about him.”
“No, you just insisted I give him a job for which he had absolutely no qualifications.”
“He’s an errand boy. What qualifications does an errand boy need?”
“So you do remember.”
Sandra blushed, not seeing a way to deny it after that blunder.
“Well, he’s not an errand boy anymore. I’ve made him my personal assistant.”
“What happened to Cherise?”
“She said she wanted to work in marketing.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. There was an opening, and of course she was the first to know about it, so she asked if I would consider her for the job.”
“And you said yes?”
“Well, I had to clear it with the head of marketing, of course. But it turned out Cherise had already talked to her, so she had no objection.”
“That worked out well.
“It certainly did. So, back to the terms of our agreement.”
“I don’t know. I really like having bragging rights. The only point in having more tangible stakes is to make the bet more interesting, but since I’ve already won, it won’t be very interesting, will it?”
“I guess not. How about you pick a restaurant for dinner tonight? Anything you want.”
“I have been wanting to try that new Indian place.”
“Ugh! I hate Indian food.”
“Then you shouldn’t have lost a bet to me.”
“Fair enough. You ready to go?” “Just need to grab my purse.”
To be continued…
