Short Story

Protection: Part II

school hallway

This is the second part in a series, so if you have not already read Part I, you might want to do so before continuing.

“2E, 2D, 2C.” Sarah stopped and looked at the dead end in front of her, then back down at the piece of paper in her hand that clearly said her acting class was in 2B, which apparently didn’t exist in this dimension. “Are you kidding me?”

“Looking for 2B?”

Sarah turned to find her very own hero standing behind her, complete with the wavy brown hair, strong jaw, and piercing blue eyes. And, apparently, he was psychic to boot. “How’d you know?”

“You have the lost expression of a freshman, and you look like an acting student. Also, Professor Klein posted me down here to direct all the freshmen to the classroom, which is actually at the other end of the hallway. We think they might hide it intentionally just to confuse freshmen because the way they label their classrooms makes absolutely no sense. I hope you won’t take it as an indication that the school is untrustworthy.”

Sarah laughed. “Not if the professors are willing to stand out here in the hallway just to make sure students get to class safely.”

“Oh, I’m not a professor. Just a TA.”

“Oh, my mistake,” Sarah said with a smile and extended her hand. “I’m Sarah, by the way.”

“Blaine,” he said, shaking her hand.

“Oh. Is that a family name?”

“Nah. My parents said when I came out, they just thought I looked like a Blaine, so.” He shrugged, as though that concluded his sentence.

“Well, I have to say I agree with your parents. You do look like a Blaine.”

“You think?”

“Absolutely.” She struggled to find another topic to make small talk, having exhausted this one, but found nothing.

And Blaine was still standing there, looking at her with that awkward smile. “Well, I guess I’ll see you in a few minutes,” he said finally.

“That you will.” Sarah smiled and made sure to sway her hips a bit as she headed in the direction he had indicated.

Once she reached the hidden classroom, Sarah saw all the chairs arranged in a circle around the perimeter of the room. She chose the one closest to the door, guessing the TA would be stationed near there during the class. Her guess turned out to be accurate and she smiled to herself as Blaine closed the door behind the last of the students and leaned against a table that was positioned up against the wall next to the door.

As everyone got settled in their seats, Sarah laid her bag on the floor next to her chair on the side that faced Blaine and thanked the gods she had worn a low-cut top. She leaned over the side of her chair, making a show of rummaging around in her bag while giving Blaine a view of her cleavage, while also pretending she was completely ignorant of the show she was giving. Finally, after she had spent as much time as she reasonably could to find her iPad, she straightened up and looked directly at Blaine, who promptly shook his head and averted his gaze. Sarah didn’t let her smile show as she inwardly celebrated her victory.

To be continued…
