Short Story

No Comfort

“The memories will remain forever,”
“The best parts of her live on in you,”
“She will live on in the beauty that surrounds us.”

Bullshit.

The memories will fade.
I inherited some of your good qualities,
And some of your bad.
As for your best,
Of that I’m not so sure.

I know they mean well.
I know they mean to comfort,
But they can’t.
There is no comfort.

I’ll never see you again,
Never hear your voice.
Never see your face light up
At something that delights us both.

I can’t call you,
Can’t ask for your advice,
Can’t vent to you,
Can’t get your opinion.
I can’t, I can’t, I can’t.

You’re gone
In every sense.
Gone.
And there is no comfort.
