New Pastures: Part IV

This is the fourth part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II, and Part III before continuing.

Having exhausted all my other options, I only had one option left: The Farm.

My mom had grown up on a farm in Nowheresville, Indiana before escaping to the big city, where she met my dad. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Her brother still runs the farm. The last thing I wanted was to head out there, but without a job, I couldn’t get another apartment. And having overstayed my welcome at my sister’s place, it was either couchsurf with friends until I ran out of friends, or give up and head out to the Farm.

As tempting as the former option was, my friends, like my sister, had families of their own, and not all of them are as adorable as my niece. I know I’m biased, but if you saw her, you’d understand.

The first thing my uncle said when he saw me was, “That dog is not coming in here.”

I had been expecting this, so I shrugged and said, “Then neither am I.” I turned on my heel and went back to my car.

I still didn’t have anywhere to go, so I made a little camp for us in the car. I pulled out Cordy’s food and water bowls, put food and water in them, and set them on the floor of the car where she could reach them.

I then took out the snacks I had brought for myself and made a meal out of them. I’d have to come up with something more substantial if we were going to be here for a while, but that was a problem for Future Charlotte.

Present Charlotte was busy lowering the back of my car seat as far as it would go so I could lie on it. It wasn’t a perfect solution, but it worked.

All I needed was to look over at Cordy, who was curled up on the passenger side seat, eyes looking at me with concern at the way her life had been turned upside down, but trust that I would take care of her.

I didn’t expect to get much sleep like this, but I must have been more tired than I realized because I drifted off in no time.

To be continued…
