This is the second part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I before continuing.
Emoni sat at the bar as she checked the time on her phone again. Only two minutes had passed since the last time she had checked, but she couldn’t stop herself from checking again. This was supposed to be Meghan’s first party since her mom had died and Emoni hoped Meghan hadn’t chickened out and decided to stay home instead. She had introverted tendencies, even at the best of times, but Emoni thought Meghan had spent enough time alone in her apartment and now it was time for her to get back out in the world.
Emoni was just about to ask the bartender to refresh her drink when she felt two familiar hands land simultaneously on her shoulders. She turned around, and there was Meghan, grinning at her.
“There you are! I was just beginning to think you had decided to bail on us.”
“Me? Never. I just couldn’t decide which outfit I liked best. It feels like forever since I’ve been to a club.”
“Well, you look amazing. I love those earrings.”
“Thanks. They were my mom’s.”
“Nice. I was just about to order my second mojito of the night, which means you’re behind. Should I order two for you, so you can catch up?” Emoni said with a wink.
“No thanks. I’ll just have a Sea Breeze.”
Emoni almost sprained her neck doing a double take. “A what?”
“A Sea Breeze.”
Emoni looked at her friend for a moment to try to determine if she was joking. “I have never seen you drink a Sea Breeze in your life.”
Meghan shrugged. “There’s a first time for everything.”
“Aren’t you allergic to grapefruit?”
Meghan smirked. “No, I just said that to avoid eating it.”
“Then why are you ordering a drink with grapefruit juice?”
“It was my mom’s favorite drink. I feel like it’s fitting for my first drink on my first, official night out since she died.”
Emoni couldn’t argue with that, but she noticed Meghan never switched to any of her standard drinks after finishing her first Sea Breeze, even after Emoni tried to order her a mojito. It was definitely weird, but who was Emoni to judge how anyone grieved the loss of a parent?
To be continued…
