Siobhan’s phone buzzed and she looked at the screen. Then she looked up at Jessica, who she found looking back at her.
Jessica’s eyebrows rose. “Is it he?” she asked in an abnormally low tone Siobhan guessed was meant to sound suggestive.
Siobhan nodded.
Jessica bounced up and down in her armchair. “Answer it!”
Siobhan grabbed the phone, hit “accept” and put the phone to her ear. “Hey,” she said, hoping she sounded casual.
Jessica mouthed, “speaker” and Siobhan shook her head, keeping the phone to her ear. Jessica pouted.
“Hey,” came Josh’s voice from the other end of the line. “What’s up?”
“Nothing much. Just chilling at home. You?”
“Laundry day.”
“Oh, exciting.”
“I know, right? Listen, do like zombie movies by any chance?”
“I love zombie movies.”
“Great. There’s one that just came out and I thought we might go see it together.”
“Peninsula of the Dead?”
“That’s the one.”
“I’ve been wanting to see that. I hear it’s super gross.”
“Then we should grab dinner after the movie, just to be safe.”
“Do you have a weak stomach?” Siobhan teased, risking a look at Jessica, who covered her mouth to keep her laughter from being overheard.
“No, but I don’t like to take any chances. Besides, it’s always a good idea to eat afterwards so we can talk about our favorite parts of the movie.”
“Uh huh. Whatever you say.”
“Very funny. I’ll look up some show times and text you some options. Sound good?”
“Sounds good.”
“Great. Then I’ll see you later.”
“See ya.”
Siobhan hung up and Jessica flew across the room, landing on the couch next to Siobhan and gripping her right arm with both her hands. “OMG, tell me everything!”
“We’ve decided to call the whole thing off.”
Jessica slapped her shoulder hard enough to elicit an “Ow!” from Siobhan. “Stop lying. You said ‘see ya’. That means you’re going to see him again. When? Where? How did the thing about him having a weak stomach come up?”
Siobhan laughed and gave Jessica what she wanted, if only to avoid any further physical pain.
