Poetry Short Story

Family

silhouette of a young person looking out an open window

You say we’re a family

Like that means something.

To me, family means together

I’ve got your back

And you’ve got mine

No matter what.

Or, at least

It used to mean that.

Then you left.

You abandoned me.

You chose her

Over your own flesh and blood

Over someone you grew up with.

You’ve known me your whole life.

But now that

Counts for nothing with you.

So, from now on,

For me

Family means nothing.

Family is manipulative.

Family is selfish.

Family is temporary.
