The Price of Fame: Part XVIII

This is the eighteenth part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII, Part VIII, Part IX, Part X, Part XI, Part XII, Part XIII, Part XIV, Part XV, Part XVI, and Part XVII before continuing.

“You’ll never guess who I met last night,” said Eliza

“I’m getting tired of this game,” said Angela.

“Sorry, but I don’t meet celebrities on TV so you can watch.”

“Can we just skip to the part where you tell me which amazing celebrity you met this time?”

“Hank Thomas.”

“Really? Is he as nice as everyone says he is?”

“Of course. And charming. He paid me all sorts of compliments, even though I know they were all lies.”

“You’re the liar. You’re gorgeous and you know it.”

“How did you know he complimented my looks?”

“OK, I know you can’t see me right now, but I just rolled my eyes. I’m your best friend. I know everything there is to know about you, including the fact that you’re constantly doubting your attractiveness, but not your talent or your intelligence.”

“Oh stop. I doubt my talent all the time.”

“Only because it’s as subjective as your attractiveness and I noticed you did not deny your faith in your intelligence.”

“If you lived in L.A., you wouldn’t doubt your intelligence either. Or mine for that matter.”

Angela laughed, but then she shushed her friend. “Someone might hear you and then think what a scandal that will make. Trailers have very thin walls you know.”

“Not to mention bugs,” said Eliza. “And how did you know I was in my trailer?”

“You kind of sound like you’re calling from a tin can,” said Angela. “As for bugs, did you mean like insects or the electronic bugs?”

“The electronic variety.”

“Really?”

“According to Roger.”

“Oh, so he’s just ‘Roger’ now, is he?”

“You know who I mean.”

“I do. All too well. I just think it’s interesting that you finally decided to stop rubbing it in my face for a change.”

“What? I don’t rub it in your face.”

Angela let her silence be her answer.

“OK, maybe I do a little, but can you blame a girl for wanting to brag?”

“A little. Especially if it sounds like the honeymoon is already over.”

“I wouldn’t say that. It’s just … different.”

“More intense?”

“Yeah. How’d you know?”

“We’ve seen this every time a celebrity starts dating someone. Remember that time the British paparazzi followed Princess Kate’s sister and she’s the one who got shamed for laughing when someone else pointed a fake gun at the people who were stalking them?”

“Ugh. I’d forgotten about that. God, this all looked so easy when I wasn’t smack in the middle of it.”

“Yeah, life is usually like that. Especially when the gossip columns make it sound like it was obvious that So And So shouldn’t have done Such And Such.”

“You’re supposed to make me feel better.”

Angela laughed. “You just spent a night with Roger Stevens and got to meet Hank Thomas and I’m supposed to make you feel better?”

“Good point. Have I mentioned how hot he is?”

Angela almost asked which one before catching herself and groaning. “I hate you.”

“You love me.”
