Poetry Short Story

Trust

Shark saying trust me

Trust

I’ve never been

What you might call

A trusting person.

I’ve been abandoned.

I’ve been betrayed.

I’ve been hurt.

So I keep my cards

Close to my chest.

I don’t trust easily.

I hate trust games.

But what does it mean

To trust?

In a society

So interconnected

So intertwined?

When I cross a bridge

I trust the people

Who designed and built it

When I climb

A set of stairs

Use an elevator.

I trust.

When I enter a building

Walk around the floors

Watch a storm rage outside

I trust.

All this

Despite the fact

No one has earned that trust.

Bridges collapse

Elevators fail

Buildings implode.

And yet

What choice do I have

But to trust?

To refuse to trust

Is to refuse

To participate in society.

But don’t misunderstand me.

That doesn’t mean

I have to trust you.
