Short Story

Betrayed: Part II

Two women looking at each other from two different frames. One frame is filled with black, the other is filled with white.

This is the second part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I before continuing.

This time I was the one sending the text saying, “We need to talk.”

I sent it to my best friend, Nikki.

Excuse me. My former best friend.

I fumed while waiting for her to call me. I stomped down the stairwell and out into the street.

Then I stomped down the street for a mile and a half until I reached a park.

Then I threw myself onto a bench in front of a pond and glared at the pond.

After three hours, instead of calling me, she texted, “Did you talk to Randy?”

What the hell kind of a question was that?

I wasn’t about to try to have this conversation via text. If she wasn’t going to call me, I was just going to have to call her.

“Hey, Ashley.” She sounded nervous, but like she was trying to keep her tone light.

“What the hell, Nikki!”

“This is why I wanted Randy to talk to you.”

“Why? Because you didn’t have the guts to tell me yourself that you went behind my back to steal my boyfriend?”

“It’s not like that.”

“Really? Then tell me what it’s like.” I shut up long enough for her to say something, even though I was nowhere close to being in a mood to actually listen to anything she had to say that was not, “I’m so sorry. You’re right. I’ll tell him it’s over.”

“Well, you know, you’ve been working a lot, and he needed someone to keep him company.”

“Are you kidding me? Is he a dog that can’t be left alone for a few days?”

“Everyone gets lonely, Ashley.”

And that’s when I realized what this was really about.

“There are a lot of people you could have spent time with if you were really so lonely, Nikki. You didn’t have to steal my boyfriend.”

I hung up before she could reply.

Honestly, that went better than I had expected.

To be continued…
