Dying to Be a Bride: Part XI

This is the eleventh part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII, Part VIII, Part IX, and Part X before continuing.

“Mr. Jones, you’re under arrest,” Detective Knott said as she pulled out her handcuffs.

He looked surprised, but only for a moment. The expression was quickly replaced by one of resignation.

Detective Knott proceeded to recite his Miranda rights. She was just finishing up and starting to lead her perp to the police vehicle when his sons showed up and started to demand to know what was happening.

“It’s alright, guys,” he said before another man who looked to be about the same age as Mr. Jones told him not to say anything. He already had his phone to his ear and Knott would have bet good money he was calling a lawyer.

They passed Anita, who looked up as she heard the commotion her brothers were still making.

“What’s going on?” She asked.

“They’re arresting Dad,” said Chad.

“What? Why?”

“We don’t know.”

Mr. Jones gave Anita a meaningful look. He took his friend’s advice not to say anything, but apparently he didn’t need to. All it took was the expression on his face to make Anita’s eyes widen. “Dad, no.”

He turned from her without saying anything and got in the police vehicle.

“Wait! This is a mistake,” Anita said.

But no one was listening to her. Officer Bates was already climbing into the front seat of the car getting ready to drive the perp to jail. Anita’s brothers were going back and forth between trading looks with each other to watching the car drive off with their dad in handcuffs.

Only Detective Knott paused. Something in Anita’s voice — in the looks she had traded with her father — made her think Anita might know something she didn’t.

When Anita cast her eyes about and they landed on Knott, the detective said, “Is there something you want to tell me?”

Anita’s gulp was almost audible as she nodded her head.
