“I would like to start by thanking you all for coming out to hear my side of things at this press briefing. I know that the President and I have not always appeared to be united in our endeavors, but I want to assure the American people, and in particular the members of my party, that we remain as strong and united as ever. While we may not always agree, I have every faith in our current President as a visionary leader of this great nation. I have every confidence in his ability to lead us through this time, which has seen our country more divided than ever before. Through his vision and leadership, we can overcome all obstacles.”
“Senator, what do you have to say about the recent allegations against the President?”
“To paraphrase one of my favorite writers, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a man in power will always be accused of various indiscretions by his political opponents. It is the nature of power to attract accusations and opposition. There will always be people who will stop at nothing to discredit the man who gained what others have lost.”
“So you don’t believe his accusers?”
“Not for a second. No. I have always known the President to be among the most respectable and upstanding men of our time, and that has not changed.”
“What about last month when you compared him to a villain in a children’s book about mages and witches?”
“I never did so, and to say I did is a false accusation meant to tear this party apart, but it will not stand. True Americans know that we always stand united in the face of opposition.”
“We have you on tape as saying—”
“I’m afraid that’s all the time we have for today. God bless America and God bless the great President of this great country!”
Charles gave the crowd of faces, cameras, and microphones a big wave as he had been taught to do in his very first media training session, then allowed his security team to escort him back to his office. No doubt the President would be pleased, but Charles still had a lot of work to do if he was going to have any hope of delivering on his promises to the president.
