Short Story

The Island

Bobbi: Hey, Bruce.

Bruce: Yeah, Bobbi?

Bobbi: Guess what I saw the other day?

Bruce: A deer.

Bobbi: No.

Bruce: A rabbit?

Bobbi: No. Well, yes, but that’s not what I wanted to tell you. I saw a whole truck full of nothing but sticks!

Bruce: Wow. That’s a lot of sticks. *starts drooling*

Bobbi: It was more sticks than I had ever seen in my whole life! What do you think they’re going to do with all those sticks.

Bruce: Probably eat them. It’s what I would do.

Bobbi: Have you ever seen a human munching on a stick?

Bruce: *thinks* Now that you mention it, I don’t think I have.

Bobbi: Humans are so weird.

Bruce: I know, right?

Bobbi: So if they didn’t want to eat the sticks, what are they going to do with them?

Bruce: Maybe they were collecting them for their dog.

Bobbi: Whoa. That must be one lucky dog!

Bruce: Yeah. I wouldn’t mind being that dog.

Bobbi: Do you think we could get our humans to get that many sticks for us?

Bruce: How would we do that?

Bobbi: I’m not sure yet, but there has to be a way. Maybe if we start by encouraging our humans to let us have a few sticks, then they’ll let us have more sticks, and then we get them to let us have more sticks, and we’ll build up from there.

Bruce: You’re always plotting something, aren’t you?

Bobbi: We have to. Who knows what we might miss out on if we don’t ask for it.

Bruce: My humans give me everything I want.

Bobbi: But you haven’t been to The Island. If you were more ambitious, maybe you could have come with us.

Bruce: What’s The Island?

Bobbi: It’s a wonderful place full of grass, and trees, and deer! So many deer!

Bruce: Why haven’t I ever been to The Island?

Bobbi: Because you’re content with what you have. When you ask for more, you get more.
