Short Story

Comments: Part I

“I’d call this article stupid, but because you’re such an ugly cunt, it’s just funny. I wouldn’t fuck you if you paid me.”

“I would. Bitch needs to be taught a lesson.”

Lilah scrolled through the comments on the online article she’d written about the portrayal of rape in television. Most of them didn’t worry her.

It was the one with a picture of her front door overlaid with an image of a gun sight’s crosshairs that made her break out into a cold sweat. It even listed her address.

The next second, she had the phone to her ear. “Doug, I need you to disable comments on the website.”

“What? The whole site? Why?”

“Just my latest article if you can. Otherwise it’ll have to be the whole site. Some psycho just posted a picture of my front door overlaid with a gun sight’s crosshairs. They also listed my address.”

“Jesus.”

“Can you please just disable the comments right now?!” Lilah wasn’t proud of the panicked note that took over her voice in those last two words. It wasn’t very professional. But if there was ever a time to not stand on decorum, this was it.

“Yeah. Of course. I’m doing it right now.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you going to call the police?”

“Of course, I’m calling the police.”

But once she hung up with Doug, Lilah took stock of the situation. The police would want to see the evidence. They would want to investigate the person behind the threat. She would need to explain the whole situation. Maybe it would be better if she went into the police station herself.

She took some screen shots on her phone documenting the worst of the comments before grabbing her jacket and heading out into the chilly October air.
