This is the fourth part in a series, so if you have not already done so, you might want to read Part I, Part II and Part III before continuing.
“ANGEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLL! HEY! ANGEL! OUR SUPREME BEING! I NEED TO TALK TO YOU!”
“So talk to me.”
“Ah! Stop doing that!”
“You called me.”
“That doesn’t mean you should just appear out of thin air right behind me. We mere mortals aren’t used to that. Besides, I didn’t know if you’d actually show up. A little distance would be appreciated.” Adila held one arm straight out in front of her to emphasize her point.
One corner of the angel’s mouth twitched and Adila could have sworn she (the angel was back in the form of a female) was trying to suppress a smile. “My apologies. You were moving about so much that it made it difficult to discern the best place to land.”
“Whatever. We need to talk. I changed my mind. I don’t want to do this. I can’t be a mother. Not now. Take it back.”
“Take it back?”
“Yes. The pregnancy. The baby. The fetus. Whatever this thing is inside me, take it out. I change my mind. I don’t want to be Mother Anybody.”
“I’m very sorry to hear that, but I’m afraid events have already been set in motion.”
“Yeah. I know. Three pregnancy tests told me that already. I’m telling you to set it out of motion.”
“I’m sorry, but that’s impossible.”
“Impossible? You’re an angel. Your boss is the highest power there is. Nothing is impossible for you.”
“I’m afraid that’s just not true. There are things even we cannot control. Free will is one of them, and when you agreed to take on this burden, it was your decision and your decision alone. Now you must deal with the consequences.”
Adila balked. “I did not choose of my own free will. I was tricked.”
“I beg your pardon?”
“You seduced me with all your talk of ‘Our Supreme Being’ and how they wanted a daughter and they wanted me to bear it. You talked about Mother Mary as if I could ever actually be anything like her. Mother Adila.” Adila huffed to convey how ludicrous she thought that was.
“I’m sorry if you feel we were not clear, but all I said was that Our Supreme Being had chosen you. I do not know why you were chosen and I cannot pretend to guess, only that if you have been deemed worthy, then you must be so.”
“See! That right there. That’s tricky. You’re filling my head full of compliments and grand ideas of being some saint, but I am no saint. I’m just a woman. Just Adila. Not Mother Adila. Not Saint Adila. Just plain old Adila. That’s all I ever want to be. So take it back.”
“As I said, that’s quite impossible at this point.”
“No, it’s not.”
The angel paused with the long-suffering look Adila’s mother often wore when Adila was being stubborn. “You can deny it all you want, but that won’t change the fact that you are pregnant with a holy child and you will carry it to term.”
“No, I won’t.”
“I’m terribly sorry that you’ve changed your mind, but Our Supreme Being cannot be forever making pregnancies appear and disappear at every human whim. The choice was yours and you made it.” Without giving Adila a chance to retort, the angel vanished.
“Oh, no you don’t!” Adila charged at the angel, trying to stop her from leaving, but all she managed was to run into the wall.
To be continued…
