“Sounds good. So I’ll meet you at the mall at three o’clock tomorrow?”

“Absolutely,” said Adila. “I can’t wait. I need this shopping trip so bad.”

“Me, too. TTYL.”

“Yep.” Adila closed her bedroom door behind her as she pressed the “end call” button on her cell phone. Then she gasped and fell to the floor, clutching the door handle with one hand for support.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you. It’s just that there never seems to be an easy way to do this.”

“How did you get into my room?”

“I need to talk to you.”

“And you thought breaking and entering would get us off to a good start?”

“Not really, no. But like I said: there’s no easy way to do this. It’s rather personal.”

“Personal? You barge into my bedroom without my permission and now you want to talk about what’s personal?”

“If you’ll just let me explain-“

“Nope. I’m calling 911.” Adila got up and pulled on the door handle.

It didn’t budge.

She checked the lock. She must have accidentally flipped it in her fall, but now it was jammed. She wiggled the lock. She pulled the door handle. She threw herself against the door.

Nothing.

Adila whirled around to face her intruder. “I don’t know how you did that, but unlock this door right now.”

“I just need to talk to you.”

Adila considered for a minute, studying her intruder. Then she crossed her arms. “Fine. Talk from over there. One step closer and I’ll scream.”

Her uninvited guest looked at her with pity. It didn’t make Adila feel any better, but at least she didn’t come any closer to Adila. “I’m here to make you an offer.”

Adila waited, arms still crossed.

“Our Supreme Being has decided it’s time for another child. A daughter this time.”

Adila still didn’t say anything, but her eyebrows climbed up her forehead as her head seemed to shift forward on her neck, one ear craned towards her guest, as though she hadn’t heard her properly.

“And we are in need of a human host.”

Adila laughed.

Her guest waited.

“You’re crazy.”

“I’m afraid I’m not.”

“You honestly think you can impregnate me with God’s child?”

“First of all, Our Supreme Being does not like the term ‘God.’ It’s so…limiting. Second, I will not be impregnating you at all. That will be entirely up to Our Supreme Being, and only if you consent.”

“Uh, huh.” By now, Adila had only one eyebrow raised. “And how would that work, exactly? Would ‘Our Supreme Being’ take me out to dinner first, or would we just get right down to business?”

Adila’s guest smiled, which Adila took to be a sign of progress. Until now, she had had no idea whether her guest had any sense of humor. “Right down to business, I’m afraid, but not like you’re thinking.”

“How do you know what I’m thinking?” Adila had meant it as a rhetorical question, but her guest surprised her by answering.

“We have our ways.”

Both of Adila’s eyebrows went back up. “We?”

“Angels.”

Adila laughed again.

“You’re serious?”

“Quite.”
