Welcome to Marketing Monday where I tell you all about my job as a content marketer and how the right content marketing strategy can help grow your client base.
“The shoemaker has no shoes” is something a friend of mine says as a way of laughing at herself when she does the opposite of what she tells her clients to do. As a business coach, if she doesn’t effectively present her business to a roomful of potential clients, how can she tell her clients how to present their own businesses?
In this case, it’s more like “The content marketer has no marketing content!”
As a content marketer, I make my living writing blog posts, newsletters, press releases, etc. for my clients. I gave a talk last year about how a blog can be beneficial to your business and how to get the most out of it. When someone asked what if they don’t have a blog, I merely said, “You really should.”
And yet the only blog I have is the one in which I post my book reviews. I love doing it, but it’s not doing anything to grow my business. I’ve been thinking for a while about the need to start a marketing blog, but had been putting it off for some of the same reasons my clients hire me: mostly time. Almost everyone can write, but it’s time consuming and a lot of people don’t have the time to devote to it and/or don’t want to.
Then I got an email the other day that included a link to this blog post about the importance of blogging to grow your business, as well as this one about the fact that, when it comes to marketing, content is still king.
So my existence as a “shoeless shoemaker” ends now. This is the first of what I’m calling my “Marketing Mondays” (super original, I know). The purpose of the blog is to tell you a little about me and just what a content marketer does. So tune in every Monday to get great tips on how content marketing can help you expand your audience and your client base.
For those of you following my book review blog, those reviews will now be posted on Fridays. Otherwise I’d end up spending all day on social media promoting all the different posts that have gone up on my website and it will get too confusing, both for me and my followers. If you don’t already read my book reviews, you can do so here. I do review the occasional book on marketing and/or writing, but it’s mostly fiction that I read just for fun.
If you don’t want to have to remember to come to my blog every week (Alison is spelled weird and what’s with those Dutch last names anyway?) you can sign up for my newsletter at the top of this page to get all these posts and more great content delivered straight to your inbox every month. You don’t have to worry about remembering anything because I’ll take care of it all for you. It is my job, after all.
